Descale Direct offers a range of three power
flushing pumps for cleaning central heating systems: Freddy,
Freddy Plus and the Fernox Powerflow. Each unit is capable of power
flushing domestic central heating systems, as required for compliance
with Benchmark. The main differences for the user can be summarised as
convenience, ease of use, length of time on site and price. The general
procedure for power flushing is the same for all models. Let's look at
the differences:
Freddy is a basic,
low cost, reversible flow model. It is supplied with flow and return
hoses that are permanently attached to the machine. During flushing it
is necessary for the user to temporarily fit a drain hose on the system
and to supply a mains water fill into the machine. Freddy will be
positioned close to the boiler but the mains water tap and drain cock
are often located elsewhere in the property so that it is useful to have
two people to carry out the flushing process. The maximum operating
temperature for Freddy is 35ºC which means that the cleaner must be
circulated before attaching Freddy ready for flushing. Power flushing a
twenty radiator system can be done easily within a day. Financially,
Freddy is easy to justify for someone that only needs to
power flush infrequently, say once or twice a month. As with the other
two machines, it can be used for descaling boilers and other appliances.
Freddy Plus is fully featured
with a built-in mains fill (with double check valve to prevent
backflow), dual drain, overflow and flow/return isolating valves. These
additions allow all the flow balancing operations to be controlled at
the machine, thus facilitating one man operation. The drain hose is
¾" diameter, for full bore drain, and all hoses are
detachable. Maximum operating temperature is again 35°C. Freddy Plus is
a mid-range machine that is ideal for someone flushing one or two
systems per week.
Fernox Powerflow also has its
control valves in one convenient location to allow one man operation.
However, there are additional features that put the machine at the top
of the league. It has a four-way valve to ensure that regardless of flow
direction the fill and drain valves are always correctly set. It has a
Grundfos stainless steel pump giving a maximum operating temperature of
85°C. This means that the Fernox Fast-Clean system can be used to
enable the entire cleaning process to be completed in half a day.
Fast-Clean is performed with the boiler running which accelerates the
cleaning process. The Fernox Powerflow is an altogether heavier duty
machine that is built for daily use.
Whatever the workload, Descale Direct has a range of machines to suit
the job.
